God’s Plan

Bob Briggs – Chaplain, Logan United Christian Soccer Club

Have you ever wondered how you came to be doing what you are doing? Why did you choose that pathway or this? When I look back over my life and contemplate what I have been involved in and worked on and how I received the opportunities to do these things, I am sometimes amazed at the results. That is usually because I realized that I didn’t make any conscious plans to be doing this particular task or that one.  Having said that, I know that I always had an end goal but without all the incremental steps.  Following His leading has always been a pleasurable experience and ultimately it has lead me to a major milestone in my life.

Thinking about this, I realize that it has been God’s plan all along. Did you know that God has a plan for each one of us. We may not realize it at the time but His plans are the best plans, actually they are the only plans we should follow. I can attest to this from personal experience. For instance, I know that God is interested in every part of our lives even the small, insignificant ones. Like when I ask Him for a parking space right at the front door of the shops when I am in a hurry. I can’t count the number of times that has happened for me. Let me tell you a true story. This actually happened to me, but I didn’t understand what it meant it until afterwards.

I was getting ready to drive my wife to a specialists appointment at a medical centre a few kilometres up the highway. As you probably know, specialist appointments are difficult to get and usually mean waiting for some weeks before there is an available time so I didn’t want to miss this one. Just as we were about to walk out the door I received a phone call. It took a little longer to complete than I expected and when I looked at my watch I noticed that our time to travel to the appointment had been cut by 15 minutes. I was thinking about the location of the medical centre and the likelihood of not getting a parking space. My wife had difficulty walking for long distances and walking was a slow process. As I drove out the driveway I silently prayed for no traffic on the road and green lights all the way. Have you ever done that?

Well, you guessed it, we got every red light, I mean EVERY red light. I cried out ‘Lord this is not what I asked for’. So, as we made progress along the road I began to make mental plans about how I would have to drop my wife at the door and go find a park out on the road somewhere and walk back. When we arrived, sure enough, the parking lot was full. Such a large area and not a parking space to be seen anywhere. Well, it would have to be plan ‘B’. As I approached the front door planing to let my wife out there, right up the far end of the line of parked cars someone was driving off. This space was just meters from the door. We were just a few minutes ahead of the appointment time and were able to get in the lift and arrive at reception on time.

You know, when I thought about this as I waited for my wife in the waiting room, I realized that if I had been given what I asked for, every green light, I would have arrived too early for that parking space. I would have needed to walk for at least a kilometre and we probably would not have arrived on time. I saw that God had a plan for me that day and it was the best plan.

Well, that is what I call my ‘RED LIGHT STORY’. Keep an eye out for your ‘RED LIGHT STORIES’  I believe you will see Gods plan for you in them.

As I said His plans are the only plans because scripture tell us that God sees the end from the beginning.

Isaiah 46:9-10

Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is none other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure,’

His plan from the beginning always included His Son who would bruise the heel of Satan as he said in the garden in Genesis 3:15 ‘And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her Seed; It shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise His heel.’

We cannot earn salvation, there is absolutely nothing we can physically do on our own to cover our wrongdoings.

Genesis 3:7

And the eyes of them both were opened, and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves things to gird about.

Genesis 3:21

Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

So this is where we are taught that we are redeemed by the shedding of blood. When God sacrificed animals, shedding their blood to make coats of skins for Adam and Eve, it was to replace what they had made with the work of their hands. Christ’s dying on the cross and shedding His blood, is His free gift of Grace. That is what we celebrate at Easter, Christ’s death, burial and and most importantly,  His resurrection. That is God’s plan for us, Eternal Life, to spend eternity with Him in Glory.
