Rob Briggs – Chaplain, Logan United Christian Soccer Club

Wow, can you believe it? We have been waiting for such a long time to get out of the house and the back yard and now it is here. Our soccer season is about to begin. What is the first thing you will be doing? Have you been preparing for this time, this explosion of activity, of doing all the normal things you have been used to doing all your life?

Are you ready?

Aren’t we are taught in our training periods to make sure we are warmed up, to stretch those muscles? This is to ensure that we don’t cause any damage to our body. Starting cold can be very dangerous and painful.

As I was thinking about this it struck me that it isn’t any different to the way we live our lives. Shouldn’t we treat the way we go about our life in the same way we would preparing for a game of soccer? If we are serious about it we would first prepare mentally. We want the end result to be a winning one, don’t we? That means scoring goals. I always remember some good advice I was given many years ago by an accountant who was helping me plan my business activity. He said, “you should always start with the end in mind”. I believe that this is true for all activities in our life. Remember, the skills we learn and use in team sports are also the skills we need to use in our daily lives. We should begin by understanding what our ultimate goal is. Have you considered what your end goal in life is to be? As Christians we know that we have the promise of Eternity.

He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Saviour, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs  to the hope of eternal life.

Titus 3:5-7

Everybody has eternity built into their being as there is a part of us that will live forever, it is called our soul. We can decide now, where we will spend that eternity, either with Jesus in the presence of Almighty God, or in the outer darkness in separation from God. Yes, I know what your choice is, what plans do you need to put in place to achieve that? Are you ready?

Many people believe that doing ‘good works’ earns us that ‘ticket’ into heaven, but as the scripture reading in Titus says, ‘being justified by his Grace we might become heirs to the hope of eternal life.’. We get justified by His Grace as a result of the relationship we have with him. Relationship is defined by how we communicate with Him, how we relate with Him. Do we pray often? Do we read His word each day? This is how we prepare ourselves for ‘running the good race’, the race which is our life.

Everyone who competes practices self-discipline in everything. The runners do this to get a crown of leaves that shrivel up and die, but we do it to receive a crown that never dies. So now this is how I run—not without a clear goal in sight. I fight like a boxer in the ring, not like someone who is shadowboxing.

1 Corinthians 9:25-26
